Spring AC Tune-Up: What We Check and Why It Matters

Why Spring Is the Right Time

Central Oklahoma doesn't ease into summer. One week it's 70 degrees, and the next we're pushing triple digits. If your AC hasn't run since last September, you don't want to find out it has a problem on the first 100-degree day in June.

Spring is the sweet spot for a tune-up because:

  • Scheduling is easier — Once summer hits, every HVAC company in Norman, Moore, and the surrounding area is booked out with emergency calls. In March and April, we can get to you faster.
  • Parts are available — If we find something that needs replacing, supply houses are fully stocked before peak season demand.
  • You get ahead of the heat — A system that's been sitting idle for months needs to be checked before it's asked to run 12-16 hours a day.

What a Professional Tune-Up Includes

A real tune-up goes well beyond swapping a filter. Here's what we check during a spring AC service at Trinity Climate Control:

  • Refrigerant levels — We measure the charge and check for leaks. Low refrigerant means your system runs longer, uses more electricity, and still can't keep up. It also puts stress on the compressor, which is the most expensive component to replace.
  • Condenser coil cleaning — The outdoor unit collects dirt, cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, and Oklahoma dust all year. A dirty coil can reduce cooling capacity by 20-30%.
  • Electrical connections — We inspect wiring, tighten connections, and test capacitors. Loose connections create resistance, waste energy, and can cause components to fail.
  • Contactor inspection — The contactor is the switch that turns the compressor and fan on and off. Pitted or burned contacts mean the system isn't getting full voltage.
  • Condensate drain clearing — Clogged drain lines are one of the most common summer emergency calls we get. A backed-up drain triggers a safety switch and shuts the whole system down.
  • Thermostat calibration — We verify your thermostat is reading the correct temperature and communicating properly with the system.
  • Air filter replacement — We check and replace the filter, and we'll recommend the right MERV rating for your system and household.
  • Temperature split measurement — We measure the difference between supply and return air temperatures. This tells us if the system is cooling properly. A normal split is 15-20 degrees.

Common Problems We Catch Early

Over the years, here are the things we find most often during spring tune-ups in the Central Oklahoma area:

  • Weak capacitors — Capacitors degrade over time, especially after Oklahoma's temperature swings. A weak capacitor makes the compressor struggle to start and can cause it to overheat.
  • Dirty evaporator coils — If the indoor coil is caked with dust, airflow drops and the coil can freeze over. This is often a sign the filter hasn't been changed regularly.
  • Refrigerant leaks — Slow leaks at coil joints or service valve connections. These get worse over time and the system gradually loses cooling capacity.
  • Worn blower motors — High amp draw on the blower motor means it's working harder than it should. Catching it early avoids a mid-summer breakdown.

What Happens If You Skip It

You might get lucky for a season. But skipping maintenance year after year leads to predictable outcomes:

  • Higher energy bills — A poorly maintained system uses 15-25% more electricity than one that's been serviced.
  • Shorter equipment life — Most AC systems should last 15-20 years. Without maintenance, you're looking at 8-12 years before a major failure.
  • Expensive repairs — A $150 tune-up can catch a $20 capacitor before it takes out a $1,500 compressor.

If you're in Norman, Moore, Purcell, Newcastle, or anywhere in the Central Oklahoma area, now is the time to get your system checked. Call Trinity Climate Control or visit our contact page to schedule your spring tune-up.
